The UConn Solar Tree is an interdisciplinary project led by faculty from Industrial Design, Engineering, Social Sciences, and Biology to develop, design and build a Solar Tree for test placement on the campus of University of Connecticut. The Solar Tree will contain 9 solar panels, and capable of generating enough energy to power 12 USB charging ports for personal electronics.
The Solar Tree is intended to create a sense of place, and community. To create a place on campus to gather, rest and recharge, and build community around a renewable energy source.
The Tree was introduced to the UConn campus in its first installation in April of 2023. The opening event hosted the University President. Provost, and Board of Trustees as well as many students interested in the new public sculpture. The Solar Tree is currently installed in the School of Fine Art Complex on the campus at UConn, and is scheduled to move again in the spring of 2025.
